James Roy Augenstein
James R. Augenstein, 71, of Westmoreland, passed away on March 4, 2018, at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton. He was born on October 24, 1946, in Mattoon, IL, a son of the late Howard and Hazel Roy Augenstein. James was a graduate of Somerville, MA High School in 1965. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965-1973. On August 16, 1975, he was united in marriage to Ruth Pritchard, in a ceremony which took place in the First United Methodist Church of Rome. James was formerly employed by Rome Cable and the Rome City School District, as a Custodian, until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of the Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church, Stanwix Men's Club, V.F.W of Rome and the American Legion. For over thirty years, James served as a Fire Fighter with the Lowell Volunteer Fire Dept. He also served as a Fire\Police officer. James was active in Scouting, he was a former Cub Scout Leader at Columbus School and a Boy Scout Leader at Camp Mohawk in England. His true passion was volunteering his time at Camp Aldersgate Methodist Camp, in Greig, N.Y. James loved to read, sing, do jigsaw and crossword puzzles and go deer hunting.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-two years, Ruth Augenstein, Westmoreland; a beloved daughter, Marianne Augenstein, Potsdam, N.Y.; a brother, Howard "Gene" Augenstein, New Hampshire; a sister Jeanette Augenstein, Charleston, S.C.; he was predeceased by a sister Patricia Yarletts.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 9, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, from 4-7 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Interment with Military Honors will take place in the spring at Lowell Cemetery.
