Col. Frederick S. Lockwood III, 87, of Rome, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2017 at the home of his daughter in Rome. He was born November 19, 1929 in Mt. Vernon, NY, a son of Frederick and Catherine (Van Wert) Lockwood Jr. On April 18, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marjorie L. Legg. He graduated from Colgate University in 1953 and received his MBA from George Washington University in 1966. Fred served his country in Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a Colonel with the United States Air Force from Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. He was a member of the Daedalians, still holding a pilot's license. His memberships also include lifetime membership in the National Trappers Association, NYS Fisheries Advisory Board and had been an active fishing charter captain. He is survived by his daughter Lorinda Neary of Rome; a son Frederick and Roberta Lockwood, Watertown, NY; a grandson Christopher and Melissa Neary; great-grandson Aidan; a sister Catherine Tanzer of Cordova, TN; sister-in-law Hannah Poole Lockwood of Goshen, NH; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie, and a brother William E. Lockwood. Funeral services will be held at a later date. Burial with military honors will be held at Saratoga National Cemetery. Arrangements by Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home of Rome. The family is grateful to Fred's caregivers who helped him to be able to stay at home and live a good life.
