John David Eggan Jr, 80, of Western, passed away on Sunday September 18, 2016, at the Masonic Care Community .He was born in Rome, N.Y. on April 16, 1936, a son of the late John D. Sr. and Grace Evans Eggan. John was a graduate of R.F.A. class of 1954; he then went on to attend Utica College before enlisting in the United States Army Reserves. On August 26, 1958 John was united in marriage to Mary L. Burdick at the residence of Rev. David Boswell in Rome. John was a very active member of his community serving as a Volunteer fireman for the City of Rome and the Town of Western for over 50 years. He also served on the Town of Western Board of Assessment for several years. John was a Mason and member of the Hathaway Lodge. He was a Ham Radio operator and enjoyed working and spending time with his family. While in high school John worked for Lee Bates Well Drilling. He later worked for New York State at the Rome State School. During the 1960's John and his wife Mary also operated a Allis – Chalmers dealership. In 1959 John established his own excavating business known as Eggan Excavating which is now known today as Eggan Excavating & Equipment Co., Inc. Survivors include John's loving wife Mary of 58 years; three sons and two daughters-in-law, John D. III and Sandy Eggan, Boonville, Douglas and Martha Eggan, Western and Mark Eggan, Rome; one brother Ronald Eggan and wife Ann, Rome; a brother –in- law Frank Borbely; two sister's –in-law, Nancy Prince and Elizabeth Schmitt and husband George; nine grandchildren, John Eggan (Kristina), Eric and Branden Eggan, Rachael Knight and husband Brendon, Sarah and Allyson Eggan, Andrew and Andreanna Eggan, Gabrielle Trela and husband Paul; one great granddaughter Hailey I. Eggan; several nieces nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by a daughter-in- law Jayn S. Eggan on August 10, 2016 and a sister Carol Borbely and nephew James Eggan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Care Community Rehabilitation Unit 2150 Bleecker Street Utica, N.Y. 13501 or The House of Good Shepherd Holiday Hope Program 1550 Champlin Ave Utica N.Y. 13502. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 23, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday from 4-8 P.M. at the funeral Home. Interment will take place in St. Marys' Cemetery.
