Herbert Martin Herbert Martin 97, of Rome, went to be with the Lord, on November 2, 2016, after a brief illness at Rome Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 17, 1919, in Bassett, Virginia, a son of the late Willie and Laura Hairston Martin. Herbert served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1941-1945 and was last stationed with the Air Corps at the Rome Army Air Field, Rome, N.Y. He was a member of the 2288th Quartermaster Truck Company and was awarded the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. On April 29, 1943, Herbert was united in marriage to Mary E. Holt in Mobile, Alabama. Herbert was a member of the First Tabernacle Pentecostal Christian Center where he formerly served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and member of the Board of Trustees. He is survived by his five sons and two daughters-in-law; James and Larry Martin, both of Syracuse, Leonard and Karen Martin of Rome, Richard Martin of Syracuse, David and Daphiene Martin of Glen Burnie, MD; one brother, George Martin of Bassett, VA; a sister, Eliza Ruth Martin Bungy of Bassett, VA; ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Herbert was predeceased by a grandson, Caleb Martin; six sisters, Annie Mae Martin Carroll, Gladys Martin, Helen Estelle Martin, Pauline Martin Armstead, Louise Martin and Ida S. Martin Barbour; four brothers, Robert Saunders Martin, John Nick Martin, Edmond Stanley Martin and McKinley Martin. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of 2 East at Rome Memorial Hospital for the wonderful treatment they provided to Herbert. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Tabernacle Pentecostal Christian Center 8086 Turin Road Rome, N.Y. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Tabernacle Pentecostal Christian Center, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday from 4-7 P.M. at Strong- Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.
