Michael S. Doherty

Michael S. Doherty, 79, of the Town of Lee, passed away on his wife’s birthday July 24, 2024, at Rome Health. He was born on March 6, 1945, in Rome, N.Y., the son of the late Royal and Mary Booth Doherty. Michael was a graduate of Rome Free Academy Class of 1963. On September 5, 1970, Michael was united in marriage to the former Theresa Williams. Together they raised three children, John, Christopher and Patrick. On September 18, 1963, Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was later attached to the174th Air Force Fighter Wing Squadron from March 6, 1976, to February 28, 1998, for 26 years of combined service to the United States Air Force. Michael was formerly employed by Oneida Limited and Turning Stone Casino. He will be remembered as a loyal husband, who had the spirit of adventure, who had been to many places around the world. Michael was an avid reader who enjoyed the literary work of American Novelist Clive Cussler. He was a talented model ship builder and baseball fan who enjoyed watching his Mets and N.Y. Yankees.

He is survived by his three sons and two daughters-in-law, John and Mandy Doherty of Rome, Christopher Doherty of Liverpool and Patrick and Jennifer Doherty of PA; two brothers, Royal (MaryAnn) Doherty and Paul Doherty; a sister, Diane (Joe) Ceklovsky; seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa and brother, Richard Doherty.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 4 to 7 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday at 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rome.
