1940 – 2024

 

Judith F. Welfel, 83, of Rome, passed away on Thursday May 23, 2024, at Rome Health, with her loving family by her side. She was born in Watertown, N.Y. on December 18, 1940, daughter of the late Frank and Shirley Sloane Olmstead. Judith attended Holland Patent schools. On September 27, 1958, she married William Joseph Welfel in St. Mary’s Church. Together, they raised their eight children in Rome, N.Y., where she worked for Zayre and Ames Department stores.

Judy will be remembered for her wonderful cooking and recipes known by memory. She loved her flower gardens, sitting on her porch, watching General Hospital, and spending time with her fur baby, Duke.

Surviving are her eight children and their partners; Darlene (Leonard), Lisa, Lauri, William (Kelly), Catherine (Ed), Thomas, Steven (Doreen), and Susan (Cory). Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, her siblings; Rita Brand, Barbara Hill, Gina Grogan (Rodney), all of Rome, Frank, of New Jersey, and Richard, of Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Judy was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Shirley Olmstead, her husband William, who passed on February 29, 1996, a sister, Karen Crego, two sons-in-law; Ronald Ploughmanand, and Edward Johnson, Sr., a granddaughter, Theresa May. Judy will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

A private Funeral Service for the convenience of the family will be held on Thursday May 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Strong-Burns and Sprock Funeral Home,  7751 Merrick Rd, Rome. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in Westernville Cemetery.
