Janice Mary Ward Smith passed away peacefully Saturday, January 15, 2022, in the comfort of her home. Born April 9,1926, in Utica, to Alice Smith Ward and Martin B. Ward. Janice graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1943 and then worked at Oneida National Bank in Rome. On September 21,1946 she married Fred W. Smith in the First Baptist Church, Rome. She was given away by her beloved stepfather Edward R. Graham. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1996.
Janice worked at Rome Air Development Center at Griffiss Air Force Base for 20 years. For over 50 years the family enjoyed many happy times at their camp at White Lake in the Adirondacks where they would entertain family and friends. Janice enjoyed her many junkets to go out to eat and stop for ice cream. She loved her sweets. Janice was a lifetime member of the Henry P. Smith Post Auxiliary, Rome.
Janice is survived by her sons, Edward G. Smith (Claudia) of Oriskany, and Fred W. Smith, Jr. of Moorestown, NJ; grandchildren Daniel Smith (Kristen Roos) of Yarmouth ME, Gregory Smith (Dana Cooreman) of Westmoreland; and great granddaughter Minna who brought her so many smiles. Also, sisters-in-law, Patricia Smith and Doris Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1996; her sisters Patricia Landers and Pauline Murphy; and by her daughter-in-law Karen Smith.
The family would like to thank her loving neighbors, Dale Hays – Tender Loving Care Home Care Services and the caregivers that cared for Mom over the past several years. We would also like to thank Dr. Tallandini and staff for her care for many years, and the staff at Hospice.
She will be buried next to her husband in Rome Cemetery at a private family service in the spring.
