Phyllis J. Gordon, 81, of Rome, New York, died peacefully in her sleep on October 11, 2021, at Faxon-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford, New York, after a brief Illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Phyllis was born December 9,1939, in Harrisburg, Illinois. On September 29, 1967, she married her devoted husband, Cornelius D. Gordon of Rome, New York.
Phyllis loved spending time with her many nieces and nephews and gaming at the Racetrack in Vernon and the Turning Stone Casino. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Rome, New York. The ultimate joy for Phyllis was helping and giving to others, she always offered to help those in need and found joy in doing so. She was fondly known to her friends as “Sweetie Two “and she used her charm and wit to engage people in lively conversations. She was always impeccably dressed and loved her beautiful “manicured nails.”
Phyllis attended Rome Public Schools and was employed as a Therapy Aide by the Rome Development Center for 28 years and retired in 1986. She also held positions at Oneida Ltd, Sherrill, Turning Stone Casino, Vernon Downs Racetrack, Barrier Windows, Westmoreland and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Otis (the “Big O”) Goodman, Rome; three sisters, Carolyn S. Jordan, Randallstown, Maryland, Peggy A. Stridiron, Rome, Betty G. Robbins, Rome; two brothers, Charles (Jolene) Goodman, Baltimore, Maryland, and Lionel (Stella) Goodman Sr., Taberg; nephews, Aaron (Cassandra) Goodman, Lionel (Phyllis’s Baby) Goodman III, Max Goodman, Kaleb Goodman, John (Gabriel) Jordan, Lionel (Erica )Goodman I; nieces, Lisa (Leuthauser) Goodman , Erica (Patrick) Tracey and many great nieces and great nephews, and a host of loving cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cornelius D. Gordon; her parents, Coy and (Lillian McClanahan) Goodman Sr., two brothers Coy II and Coy III Goodman, brother-in-law Donald W. Stridiron, Jr. and a special nephew, David M. Stridiron.
Special thanks to family and friends for the loving care provided Phyllis during this time. Loving thanks to her son Otis for the special care he gave her, and special thanks to Mary Cross, Carolyn Goodman, Stella Goodman, Peggy Stridiron, Kaleb Goodman, Lionel Goodman Sr., and Vinny Riolo for all their acts of love, kindness, and care.
The Family would also like to express heartfelt thanks to Drs. Kenneth Visalli, Varun Reddy, Scott Brehaut, Robert R. Pavelock. Tatyana Antonevich and their staff for their compassionate care for our sister and family during this time.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021, from 4-6 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome, New York 13440. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 A.M. at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes.
