Obituary of Leon Smith
Leon C. Smith Leon C. Smith, 82, of Westmoreland, passed away on February 16, 2019, at St. Joseph Hospital, with his loving family by his side. He was born on January 1, 1937, in Rome, NY, a son of the late Stanley and Cora Pritchard Smith. Leon was Valedictorian of his class at Westmoreland High School. On May 10, 1958, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Hand, at Annunciation Church, Clark Mills. Leon owned and operated a Smith Family Farm for a short time, was formerly employed by Revere Copper & Brass as an accounts payable manager and Bethany House as comptroller. At the age of 17 he joined the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Dept., where he still served as a Fire-Police Officer until his passing. For nearly 20 years he proudly served as Town Justice in Westmoreland. Leon was Past President of the Westmoreland Kiwanis, Life Member and Past National Vice President of F.F.A., Honorary Kentucky Col., Life Member of the Stanwix Veterans and Men's Club, member of New York Magistrates Association and early Scoutmaster of Bartlett Troop 42. In his free time Leon enjoyed time with family and friends at Snowbird Lake and volunteering at Froschauer Greenhouse.
He is survived by his beloved wife, of 60 years, Yvonne, Westmoreland; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Tamala Smith, Westmoreland; two daughters and one son-in-law, Wendy and R.B. (Rooster) Mitchell Jr., Mt. Olivet, Kentucky, Cheryl Smith, Rome; three brothers, Herbert (Kathleen), Scituate, MA, Alfred (Patricia) Smith, West Edmeston NY, Randy (Tamara) Smith, Westmoreland; a sister, Joyce Russell, Westmoreland; grandchildren, Ashley (Todd)Harvey, Andrew Smith, Special Friend Amanda Kelly, Dustin (Katelyn) Mitchell, Krystle Mitchell; Great Grandchildren, Quentin. Adrina, Devyn, Brayden, JaeLyn, Haileigh, and Grayson; many loved Nieces, Nephews and Cousins; a special friend Jean Gemelli and canine companions, Harmony and Wilber. Leon was predeceased by a son, Kenneth and a brother Ernest.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staffs' at Oneida Healthcare and St. Joseph Hospital for the wonderful care they provided. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department, 101 Station Road, Westmoreland, NY 13490.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 7P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday from 1-3 and 5-7 prior to the service. Interment will take place in Westmoreland Cemetery in the spring.
