Obituary of William J. Marcellus

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William J. Marcellus, 84, of Lee Center, passed away August 12, 2023, at Rome Hospital.

He was born in Rome on April 22, 1939, the son of the late Clifford and Beatrice (Baker) Marcellus. William was united in marriage to Diane Mooney on October 8, 1960. They shared 56 years of love and devotion until her passing on April 8, 2016. They both worked at the family business of Marcellus Overhead Door Company. William rarely sat idle. He recognized the change in seasons as maple syrup season and deer season. He would make maple syrup and candy, and then was busy processing deer and making his famous sausage for over 45 years. He also raised goats and made delicious cheese. William’s grandchildren would assist him picking dandelions for his wine and may have made some white lightning as well. He was strong-willed and stubborn. He loved to travel in his RV, making his annual trips to air shows and fiddler conventions. Fishing with his buddies left him with wonderful memories and friendships.

Bill would often be heard saying….”If you can’t fix it with door parts, it can’t be fixed!”

He is survived by his three daughters, Beth Marcellus of Lee Center, Barrie (Timothy) Utter of Taberg, and Brett Hughes of Frankfort; his son William of Lee Center; four grandchildren, Nicole, Tricia and fiancé’ Aaron Larson, Katelyn, and Abbygail (David) Glenn; seven great-grandchildren, Donald, Anthony, Kyle, Avery, Rory, Donald Kerber Jr and David Glenn Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Diane; his parents; and two sisters, Janet Baker and MaryJane Donnelly.

The family will gather at Marcellus Overhead Door Inc., 8170 Turin Rd. Rome, N.Y. on Sunday August 20, 2023 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Please stop by to offer your condolences. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to bcrf.rog the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of 2 East at Rome Hospital for their care and compassion.
