Robert W. Tharrett Obituary

Robert (Bob) Wayne Tharrett went peacefully home to Jesus on June 20, 2026, at the Abraham House in Rome, where he received exceptional care in his final days. He was born on April 11, 1931, in Ilion, NY the son of James A. and Ida Jane (VanAlstine) Tharrett. Bob graduated from Parishville- Hopkinton Central School in 1948. After high school, he enlisted in the army, returning after basic training to marry the love of his life, Donna Kay Whitton in 1952. Bob served in Korea and became a corporal before coming home again in 1954.

Bob worked in several fields after his military service, eventually becoming a manager at V.S. Jerry and Sons in Massena where heavy equipment was sold and serviced, including during the construction of the Eisenhower and Snell Locks. In 1958, Donna and Bob purchased their first Dairy Queen franchise and opened their business in Massena. Dairy Queen became their full-time occupation after relocating to Rome, NY in 1971. When Bob retired from the ice cream business he returned to one of his first ever jobs: car sales, eventually becoming a manager at Paolozzi Car World in Marcy, NY.

Bob was a member of The Masons, The Elks and American Legion Post 1794. He was also a longstanding member of Mohawk Valley Church where he proudly served in several different capacities.

Bob loved spending time with his beloved family, often telling them stories from a varied and interesting past. He could always be counted on for solid and trustworthy advice, and many family members took advantage of his infinite wisdom. Bob also enjoyed his time at his camp on the St. Lawrence River and spending the winters in Florida. He will be sorely missed by all.

Bob is survived by his wife of over 73 years, his children Tom (Noeme), JoAnn (Archie) Wixson, Rick (Susie) and Judy (Chris) Tonzi, 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for later this summer.
