Gerald Viggiano, age 89, of Rome, passed away on January 11, 2026, at Rome Health.
Gerald was the son of the late Nicholas and Connie Viggiano. He graduated from the Rome Free Academy and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Gerald was employed by the United States Post Office in Utica and Rome NY where he worked for many years before retiring.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his sister Carmena Reinig and brother-in- law, Joseph Reinig.
He is survived by his three nieces: Mary Hogan (Brian) of Latham, New York; Shirley Yermas (James) of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; and Carole Cusack (James) of Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, along with seven great-nieces and nephews and ten great-great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving companion of 19 years, Rita Moore of Rome, New York.
Gerald was a faithful member of St. John’s Church in Rome, New York, where he regularly attended services. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his closest friend, Lynn Oper and the many hours spent with his friend Tiny. He was a longtime member of the Toccolana Club, where he enjoyed playing bocce. An avid gardener, Gerald was well known as one of the best garlic growers in the area. He also enjoyed many hours of walking, biking, and playing cards with a close-knit group of friends. One of his greatest joys was the many trips to Sylvan Beach shared with Rita.
Gerald (Uncle Jerry) will be remembered for his strong faith, his service to his country, and the simple pleasures he cherished throughout his life. He was a quiet and kind man and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 11 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Church of Rome. The family will greet guests from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. prior to the service. Interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery.
