Janet Royster Obituary

Janet(Chamene) Wells was born at The Harlem Hospital on January 8th, 1954, in Harlem New York. She was the daughter of the late Reverend Napoleon and Mary wells, and was the second youngest among four other siblings. After a full and beautiful life, she passed away peacefully on August 24th, 2025 at the age of 71 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse New York.

In her early years, she began her education at PS-133 in Manhattan , and graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. As a child and young adult,  she attended Carolina Baptist Church, which was founded and pastored by her father, Napoleon wells. Shortly after high school, she met and married Raymond Royster, by which they had one son, Shawn Royster,  and moved away to California.  She eventually returned to Harlem, and worked at a check cashing facility for several years, until she made the decision to move to Rome New York, where she wound up living the rest of her life. She was far away from home and needed a church family, so the Lord led her to Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where she became a devoted member. Soon after she met James(Essence) Johnson, and they had one son together, Kashif Johnson. She worked diligently at the Oneida County Social Services building as a case worker for 31 years, until she retired in 2020.

Janet Royster was a devoted mother to her two boys, Shawn and Kashif, and led both of them by giving them the perfect example. She was always striving to improve herself, and be the best version of herself that she could be. Whether it was by quietly praying and reading her scriptures every morning, exercising every single day, devotion to learning Spanish as a second language or consistently practicing the piano, she was a perfect living example of what it meant to push yourself with no excuses, and never settle for less. She was as real as it gets, by telling the ones she loved the hard truths, while also doing so with grace and understanding. She was comfortable being the person she was, and while she could be private and keep to herself most times, she also had a knack for quietly drawing people to her by her kind and sweet nature. While not necessarily a people person, She never judged anyone, just asked that people try to do their best. She loved her family and friends dearly, and always made sure she let them know in any way she could. Janet absolutely adored her church family, and was so grateful for each and every one of the members of Mount Calvary. She valued everyone at church, and genuinely considered them family.

During her tenure as a devoted member, Janet regularly donated to the food bank, attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible school, regularly participated in the Women's Ministry, Bible Study and Tuesday's Women's Prayer line, and also was the church pianist.  She also deeply loved animals. Not just her own, but animals of all kinds from all over the world. Janet loved herself some Charlie Brown, and any given day could be seen sporting one of many T-shirts and hoodies with the various characters on them. She also loved her Lifetime Movies, Law and Order, C.S.I., and loved watching any number of shows and movies with her friends and family when she had the opportunity. She was truly a magnificent woman, mother, and friend. The Godly example of how to conduct yourself as a Christian will live on in the lives of her family and friends, as we all do our best to live as she lived, loving everybody with genuine care and grace.

Janet was preceded in death by her father Napoleon Wells, her mother Mary Wells, her brother Napoleon Wells Jr., and her sister Ruthie Jenkins.

She is survived by her sons: Kashif Johnson and Shawn Royster. Her brother: Samuel Wells of Spokane Washington. Her sister: Rosemary Wells of North Carolina. Her two grandchildren : Dante Johnson and Kameron Johnson, and a host of cousins and extended family.
