Rose Shoemaker, 92, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025. Born in Rome on December 30, 1932, to Angelo and Nazarene D’Ambrosi, Rose was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Class of 1950, and lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Church. She was united in marriage to Ronald Shoemaker in October of 1954 until his passing in 1989.
Rose’s career began at the Markson Brothers Furniture Company in Downtown Rome. She later retired after many years as manager of the checking department at Rome Savings Bank. Whether it was traveling with friends, close by and abroad, playing bocce on the Toccolana courts, lunching in style with the Red Hat girls or catching up with the fellow bank retirees, Rose was always on the go. But her favorite times were those spent with family.
Rose never missed a softball game, a soccer tournament, or a student-of-the-month celebration. And until her passing she hosted weekly family dinners with her grandchildren and their children, a tradition filled with love, laughter - and second helpings. She cherished everyday moments, like sitting on her deck watching the great-grandchildren play in the yard. She was the heart of her family and the glue that held everyone together.
Rose is survived by her two children and their spouses, Steve and Diane Shoemaker of Rome; Judy and Mike Mastracco of Westernville; three grandchildren, Jaclyn (Christopher) Pallas, Jessie (Zachary) Jacobs and Leigh Shoemaker; four great-grandchildren, Cole and Zoe Rose Pallas, Jake and Millie Rose Jacobs; two sisters-in-law, Mary Shoemaker and Vincenza (Vinnie) D’Ambrosi; special nieces and nephews who always felt and provided unwavering love and support; and many good friends, especially Tiny and Doris. She was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Santo “Sam” and Joanne D’Ambrosi, a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Herbert Jeror; a brother, Angelo Jr. D’Ambrosi; and a brother-in-law, Paul Shoemaker.
Family and friends are invited to share stories and memories during calling hours on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 4-7 p.m., at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Church.
In honor of Rose’s love for her children and family, contributions may be made to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, One Children's Circle, Syracuse, NY 13210.
