Richard W. (Dick) Mumpton Jr.

   Richard W. Mumpton Jr. 89, of Rome, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025, at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton, N.Y. Dick was born on June 24, 1935, in Rome, N.Y. a son of the late Richard W. and Elizabeth Traxel Mumpton. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy Class of 1953. Following graduation, Dick enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and proudly served his country during his four-year enlistment. Upon returning form the Coast Guard Dick accepted a position with the United States Post Office in Rome. On May 21, 1960, Dick was united in marriage to Diane Cerjan in St. Peter’s Church of Rome, N.Y. He was a member of Transfiguration Church of Rome, Rome Elks Lodge 96, Lake Delta Yacht Club and served as past Commodore. During hockey season Dick was the Official Timekeeper for Copper City Chiefs, Rome Free Academy and Rome Catholic High hockey teams at Kennedy Arena. He was a true Red Socks Fan and avid golfer.

   He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Mumpton of Sauquoit, N.Y. three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Antoinette Mumpton  of Rome, Kevin and Debbie Mumpton of Sauquoit and Brian Mumpton of Rome; former daughter-in-law, Lisa Mumpton; a brother and sister-in-law, Kurt and Nancy Mumpton, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Mumpton of Rome; seven grandchildren, Breanna Mumpton, Robert Hughes, Frank Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Tiffany Blaschek, Ben Mumpton and Cameron Mumpton; along with ten great grandchildren. Dick was predeceased by a brother, James Mumpton.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 3-6 P.M. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home 7751 Merrick Road, Rome. A Mass of Christian  Burial will take place on Thursday at 9 A.M. at St. John’s the Baptist Church in Rome.
